This week's featured coffee is the Monsoon Malabar. This unique process creates a coffee found only on the coast of India. In the 19th century, a shipment of coffee beans that was headed for Europe was waylaid due to a monsoon, leaving the coffee beans exposed. The accidental exposure to humidity and monsoon weather were ideal conditions to create a coffee bean that quickly became a fad in Europe.
Monsoon Malabar coffee is extremely flavorful and full-bodied. The aging process and exposure from the monsoon removes nearly all of the typical acidic qualities of coffee. This creates a thick and almost grainy quality with strong smoky, spicy and earthy notes. Drinkers can also expect a sweetness that is best enjoyed hot with milk and sugar.
